Exactly 90 centimeters! "We haven't seen it in world literature"
Asiye Taşdelen, a farmer, was admitted to Trabzon Kanuni Training and Research Hospital due to swelling and pain in her abdomen. Healthcare workers examined Taşdelen and performed imaging tests, revealing three separate cat and dog cysts measuring 90 centimeters in her liver, covering her abdomen. The decision to undergo surgery was made, and following a two-hour operation, two of the cysts were removed and one was evacuated and brought under control by General Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. İsmet Çelik and Gastroenterology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aydın Aktaş.
Dr. Çelik stated that this is the first time in world literature that a cyst reaching 90 centimeters in diameter and filling the entire abdomen has been encountered, and explained the transmission routes of the disease, known as cat-dog cyst. Dr. Çelik explained that this disease is caused by parasites that enter the human body through direct contact with the feces of stray animals and pets not subject to veterinary care, or through soil, water, or food contaminated with feces. Dr. Çelik warned that the cyst can eventually settle in the liver, lungs, and other organs, causing serious health problems.
Dr. Çelik, explaining that the patient's entire abdomen was covered in cysts, said, "Kanuni Training and Research Hospital in Trabzon has become a pioneer. Our patient came to us from Gümüşhane with abdominal distension and pain. Upon arrival, we performed further examinations and discovered a mass filling his entire abdomen. Upon further examination, we discovered that the cyst had been caused by a cat or dog. Our patient had comorbidities."
We evaluated the case with the relevant medical specialists to rule out these conditions. We discussed the suitability of our patient for surgery. The council decided to perform surgery. Our patient had three separate cysts in his liver. His entire abdomen was covered with cysts. We removed two of them completely. The other one was examined and evacuated. We have never seen a cyst that reaches 90 centimeters and fills the entire abdomen in the world literature. The surgery took two hours. Our patient's bile ducts were examined. Our patient is doing very well. He can breathe independently, independent of the ventilator. We will transfer him to the ward tomorrow."
Dr. İsmet Çelik explained that cat and dog cysts in the human body are usually transmitted through animal feces or food consumption and can be discovered incidentally. He said, “Asiye is a housewife who farms. Therefore, she has contact with cats and dogs. Since they keep pet cats and dogs, they hadn't considered the possibility of such a thing. This cyst developed over a period of more than four to five years. The presence of the cyst is revealed through a blood test or any screening. It can occur in anyone. It can infect the liver, lungs, and other organs. This cyst is a disease transmitted through the feces and food consumed by cats and dogs. Cat and dog cysts are usually discovered incidentally. They settle in the liver. This was the case in our patient.”
"THEY SHOULD CHECK THE HEALTH OF ANIMALS"Çelik, issuing a warning to citizens who come into contact with cats and dogs, said, "Our biggest fear is an allergic reaction. If a 90-centimeter cyst spreads throughout the body, it could cause death. We are taking precautions against any undetected spread. People who come into contact with cats and dogs should check to see if the animals are healthy and carry the cat-dog cyst."
